The event this year will be a smaller festival, with only 1000 tickets being sold. It takes place on the weekend of the 2nd – 4th July. Visit http://www.makerfestival.co.uk for more information.

Californian hardcore punksters to come to Plymouth.

Top Plymouth venue The White Rabbit have announced that Californian hardcore punks The Bronx will be playing at the venue on Saturday 26th June. This is the first time The Bronx have come to the city and with The Ghost Of A Thousand announced as support, it should be a corker.

Opening the show though, will also be The Bronx. Well, not quite. Mariachi El Bronx are The Bronx’s alter egos. So you will get to see the band twice in one night! Awesome.

The Bronx formed in 2002 and have since released 3 albums (all titled ‘The Bronx’) and the fourth album, ‘Mariachi el Bronx’ was released in September of last year. If you wanna check out more of The Bronx, head over to their MySpace profile.

Tickets cost £10 and you can get them from www.seetickets.com or from PMC.

Looking to avoid the World Cup? How about a night of live music, DJs, BBQs and a Mountain Boarding competition instead?

Not bothered about the World Cup? Well good news! Maker Events and the Mole Train Project have got together and organised a night of Live Music, DJ’s, BBQ’s and Mountain Boarding to take place at Maker Heights in Cornwall on Saturday 12th June.

The event kicks off mid day with a Mountain Board free ride session before a competition featuring some of the best riders in the world kicks off at 3pm. An outdoor stage will host various live bands and DJs whilst a BBQ will also be taking place.

In the afternoon, the bar will open in the Energy Room, which will be the venue for the rest of the nights entertainment including live sets from local faves like Hillside Heroes, Richard James and Hexadeci. The party doesn’t stop there, however, as after the bands there will be DJ sets from the likes of DJ Coy who has recently played with DnB legends such as Grooverider, Mampi Swift and Nicky Blackmarket, as well as sets from DJ Polo and DJ Skank Maggot.

With a graffiti demo from Andy Knights also included, this event has a lot going on. If you’re not worn out by the Sunday, a wind down session will be taking place with more bands tbc. Check back here to get the latest news on Rooster Park Open Day.

A new Plymouth promoter tells of how he arranged the Flo Rida gig at Plymouth Pavilions

Music promoter, 20-year-old Alex Goss from St John, near Torpoint has persuaded US rapper Flo Rida to play the Plymouth Pavilions on Thursday, November 12.

Alex told Music Crate: “I am passionate about music and have always wanted to break into the industry. I just woke up one morning and realised what I wanted to do. I had no idea how to go about it, but I just started asking people and getting stuck in. It has been hard work, but I’m loving every minute of it.”

Alex is setting up his own company and aims to bring other quality live acts to the region. Asked whether he is concerned the new business venture will be a success, he’s philosophical.

“For me this is a great adventure and I’m just enjoying it. Who knows what will happen, but getting a top name like Flo Rida has given me the confidence to keep going,” he said.

Still, he could probably fall back on his modeling career… or his engineering degree at Plymouth University.

Alex has also drawn inspiration from his father, sailor and adventurer Pete Goss, who is mentoring him as he starts his business.

Alex said: “Dad has always been an inspiration to me and brought me up to believe anything is possible if I work hard enough for it. The strap line for his projects is ‘Dare to Dream’, which is what I have done. It is fitting that the first act I have booked is Flo Rida. There is real synergy and I admire what he stands for; in spite of his upbringing, he has used music to achieve his dream.”

Currently in negotiations with a top support act, Alex told us: “I can’t say too much, but I am very excited about this concert, it is going to be huge and have a great atmosphere.”

Alex is offering fellow NUS cardholders a 10% discount on the £25 ticket price, which are available from the Plymouth Pavilions box office on 0845 146 1460.

When it comes to Plymouth band Arthur Walker, the saying goes, if you can’t get to Wakefield, let Wakefield come to you.

The Plymouth combo headlined Wakefield’s Snootyfox on Thursday, October 15, and we managed to get some live footage of the foot-stampers on stage.

Online TV Shows by Ustream

And because that was just a taster of the Arthur Walker live set, we thought we’d include a snippet of the album teaser, and the latest Arthur Walker single video Angles and Lines.

The new album encompasses Arthur Walkers search for that perfect pop song. The band’s writer Steve Stones told Clare Robinson on What’s on South West: “I realised that I was sometimes trying to be too experimental, so we’ve tried to simplify the newer songs and we’re always on the look out for that perfect pop song.”

He was referring to their spine-tingling ‘I Am A Skull And I Am Evil’ era. And the ‘pop perfection’, why that’s Angles and Lines, of course.

• The official launch of the album will be at The Hippo, Plymouth on Friday, October 30.

Jess Brown, from Paignton, has made it to the regional finals of the Open Mic UK competition.

With influences including PJ Harvey and Radiohead, you may not have expected singer/songwriter Jess Brown from Paignton to have gone in for a competition looking for the next big thing, but she’s in the regional finals of the Open Mic UK auditions in October

“I haven’t been in many of these types of competition before but as I could possibly promote my own music I thought it was worth checking out,” she said

“I’ve been playing and writing songs for some time and although originally from Devon, lived in California for eight years where I played in various bands as well as a solo artist. I’ve been back in the UK for two years now and have really been able to focus on writing and performing in that time.”

The next step is an album and tour… at some point.

“I’m hoping this competition will at least give me some more exposure and help raise my profile both locally and farther afield,” said Jess.

• This is an extract of an interview with Jess Brown on the People’s Republic of South Devon.

AC: Hey Adam. That was a lovely acoustic set there, but not without it’s problems?

AR: No there were a few sound issues but the poor sound guy didn’t know we were coming and a had a bit of a surprise..A 9 piece-band surprise! But after the problematic start, it started to gel quite nicely, especially at the end.

AC: The second album, ‘The Truth About Push Me Pull You’, has been out for a few months now, how has it been received?

AR: Amazingly well. All of the reviews have been positive and very complimentary, and we’ve been selling out of the CD’s at gigs too, so it obviously is striking a chord.

AC: Have you been writing any new material for a follow up yet, or just concentrating on promoting the album?

AR: Well we’ve all started writing new material already, and there seems to be a change in the approach. Whereas with the last record we wrote almost exclusively in the studio, this time everyone’s bringing their own contributions in to practice that they’ve already written. Don’t get me wrong, writing in the studio is a lot of fun, but it changes what you come up with, and can be quite expensive! So at the moment we’re just going through the ideas, and everyones got some which is nice.

AC: So will we see some appear in any of your forthcoming gigs?!

AR: At some point sure. We’ve been playing the songs from the album for a while now, almost 2 years for some of them, and it’s always nice to try something different out live.

AC: What gigs have you got coming up?

AR: The next one is back at the Hippo on the 12th June, and then we’re going to be in Wales in July at the Toucan club in Cardiff and the Bloom Festival in August which we’re really excited about.

AC: Excellent. Finally, are you doing anything with your side project Building Estoban?

AR: Well I’m always writing and have been working on my third LP for a while now. At some point I hope to do a show but only if I can get enough people to faithfully reproduce the vision that’s captured on the recordings. If I can do that then you can expect to see the Estoban show at some point later in the year.

With host Al ‘benaza’ Jones opening up the evening with some mellow originals & a few popular tracks.

This week:

People Cakes front-woman Laura Jenkins performed a solo ensemble of originals, accompanied with her smooth husky voice.

Junction regular Dan Reid stepped to, with some mellow acoustic & some energetic crowd pleasers.

Birthday girl Holly had an unconventional happy birthday song in the form of AL singing bill baileys beautiful ladies Acapella, Then got up on stage and gave us some vocals herself.

Liam & Simon entertained with a JT number & an array of crowd pleasing covers/crossovers.

Joe Stephenson & his dad Mark got up on stage, Joe on guitar and Mark on the Violin. A fantastically diverse set.

And Junction favourite (and Plymouth open mic regular) the T-Dawg aka Tony told us to turn off our telly’s before they kill us, and ended a great set with “Gatwick”.

To Finish off, Al got up to close the evening with a flight off the conchords version, business time, and was encored to sing the classic Cider Song!
